Social Media for Startups: Grow Without Paid Ads

Building an audience on social media doesn’t require a big budget—just consistency and strategy. Start by choosing one or two platforms where you're ideal customers actually spend time. B2B? Focus on LinkedIn and Twitter. Selling to Gen Z? TikTok and Instagram Reels are you're best bets. Posting everywhere leads to burnout without results.

Create content that educates or entertains, not just sells. The 80/20 rule applies: 80% valuable posts (tips, trends, behind-the-scenes), 20% promotional. For example, a bakery might share "3 Common Cake Decorating Mistakes" videos, then occasionally post their newest cupcake flavors. Use free tools like Canva for eye-catching graphics and CapCut for easy video editing.

Engagement is you're growth engine. Dedicate 15 minutes daily to:
✓ Commenting thoughtfully on industry leaders posts
✓ Responding to every comment on you're posts
✓ Sharing user-generated content (with credit)

Hashtags and SEO matter, but don’t overdo it. Research 3-5 niche hashtags with 10K-200K uses rather then generic #business with millions. Include keywords in you're bio and captions ("Portland wedding photographer specializing in intimate elopements").

Collaborate with micro-influencers (1K-10K followers) in you're niche. Many will promote you're product for free samples or a shoutout. Track what works with free analytics (Instagram Insights, Twitter Analytics) and double down on high-performing content types.
